When diseases, such as bud rot, infect palm trees on your property, your only choice may be to cut these trees down. Follow this step-by-step guide to cut a palm tree safely and efficiently.
How To Cut Down A Palm Tree In 5 Steps
The tree professionals strongly recommend cutting palms that are 8 inches or less in diameter straight through. Use this five-step guide to cut down a dead or dying palm tree as your next DIY task.
Step 1
- Always perform this task using a chainsaw.
- Wear your safety gear, including gloves, closed-toe shoes, chaps, and safety glasses.
- Ensure there are no trees, utility lines, or other structures nearby that could be damaged by a falling tree.
Step 2
- Fuel and start up your chainsaw according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Use the appropriate oil and fuel for the chainsaw.
- Always follow all safety and operating procedures.
Step 3
- Use your hands to locate the best spot on the trunk of the rotting palm.
- This spot is where you will make your first cut.
- Rotting and diseased palms are typically softer near the ground.
- Move your hands upward from the ground until you find a hard surface.
- This can help control the direction in which the tree will eventually fall.
Step 4
- Now cut one-third of the way through the palm upward at a 45-degree angle.
- Make this cut about 1 foot above the ground using your chainsaw.
- This cut should be on the side of the tree in the direction you intend it to fall.
- A second cut can now be made about 6 inches above the first cut.
- Cut number two should be made at a 45-degree angle downward.
- Remove the wedge at this time.
Step 5
- Go over to the opposite side of the tree and make another cut about 6 inches above the top cut.
- Cut straight through until the palm begins to fall.
